FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The local improv comedy group Phunbags marked its 15th anniversary in September with a celebration performance at Six Twelve Coffeehouse. The group’s name, which is spelled with a “ph,” reflects the group’s long-running catchphrase: “We have a Ph double D in comedy,” co-producer of the group Mark Landon Smith said.
The milestone show brought together both longtime fans and first-time audience members for a night of laughter, quick wit and spontaneous fun. This is the kind of entertainment that has defined Phunbags since their start, Smith said.
Founded by a small group of local actors who wanted to bring improv comedy to Fayetteville, Phunbags have performed monthly at various venues in town such as the Dickon Street Theater, Hawaiian Brians, and even places like weddings and a funeral convention, but now mostly perform at Six Twelve Coffeehouse on Wedington Drive in west Fayetteville.
Smith, who is also an executive director of Arts Live Theatre, said that being part of the troupe remains special to him even after 15 years.

“It’s just a group of friends who enjoy being together, entertaining an audience, and just love hearing people laugh,” Smith said.
Beyond providing entertainment, Smith said the shows offer something meaningful for the community.
“These performances give people an opportunity to kind of escape,” he said.
Each show offers a new experience, fueled by audience participation. From improvised sketches to creative games, no two performances are ever the same which keeps both the comedians and their fans coming back month after month.
Next on the calendar for Phunbags is a Christmas-themed show which will take place Dec. 6 at Six Twelve Coffeehouse at 7 p.m.
